When my twins were younger, my husband said it would be fun to have “movie nights” with them as we introduced them to our favorite animated feature films. Because we were counting down to a trip at the time (and mostly because we are giant nerds), I took it one step ten steps further – and Disney Family Days were born. Back in the day, these were weekly occurrences. Over time they got much less frequent, but the point remains – it doesn’t take a holiday to spend a special day celebrating family and one of the Disney classics!
Our Disney Family Days are not parties, despite that my kids refer to them as such. I love planning detailed parties, and I’m sure you’ll see a few of those around here, too 😉 These, though, are much more simple. A few decorations that cost $5 or less (many are made from stuff you have lying around the house!), a themed menu, a few games or activities and a movie. Some are more elaborate than others, but young kids – and the young at heart – have a lot of fun with them!
When we initially held our Cars “Disney Family Day”, it was – quite literally – because I had just found some decorations in the clearance bin at Party City for $0.50. It’s a good thing the franchise is still so popular, because this is another very easy theme night to do on a budget! I’ve included a few extra ideas for activities, in case you and your cars fan want to stretch the theme into a full-fledged birthday party. Happy planning!
*It is a little, um, dessert-heavy. You’re welcome, or I’m sorry – whichever you prefer 😉
Lightning McQueen’s Speedy Sandwiches (mini-subs with cucumber “wheels”)
MACKaroni & Cheese
Frank’s Farm Medley
Fillmore’s Traffic Light Treats
Luigi’s Chocolate Tires
Mater’s Motor Oil (chocolate) Sundaes
- “Where is Lightning McQueen?!” (Aka, Memory)
- Musical Tires
- Hot Wheels (or similar) Races
- Tire Toss (Beanbag Toss into an old tire…. not so much throwing one around :))
- Red Light, Green Light
- Car Wash (or any water play – but if you do this one, I want to come!)
- Cars-themed board games
- Pin Lightning’s Stickers or Pin the Headlight on Mater
Don’t forget the soundtrack – it’s truly one of the best for any fun get-together!
How many times have you seen Cars? It’s definitely a favorite around here. Next time it comes up, consider adding a little extra magic – even if just a special movie-time snack!
