Great Gifts for Fitness Fans
So… I go through seasons. Sometimes, I love working out and eating well. Other times, well, I’m not a fan.
If someone you know is a big proponent of living healthily, or wants to move that direction, I’ve rounded up a few great gift ideas.
Might I suggest, though, that you consider your audience. Don’t buy one of these for someone who will hear your best Mother Gothel impression saying, “plus, I believe, [you’re] gettin’ kinda chubby…”
Under $25
Gaiam Yoga Mat – I’ve written about Yoga before, and am growing to love it even more. That said, a Yoga Mat is a necessity for far more than yoga. Pilates, Shaun T’s T25 and other workout programs that include a stretch portion, and so many other group fitness and home exercise programs would benefit from having a cushy, non-slip surface.
Sweatybands – Several years ago I bought my first “Sweaty Band” and the Western-Southern Open. I tried several other bands that were similar and made the same claims over the coming months, and nothing worked quite as well. I was pleased to see (eventually) that they’re local to me, but they absolutely ship nationwide – so you can get the one that works for picky hair no matter where you are.
FlipBelt – A couple of years ago my husband was researching ways to hold his phone, etc while running. He came across this newfangled thing called a Flip Belt, but it was definitely more geared toward women. Score (for me)! My hot pink belt has been on lots of runs with me and helped get me through some long races!
JumpSnap Ropeless Jump Rope – It’s no secret that jumping rope is a really, really great cardio workout. It’s not always simple to do though, without breaking any bones. Enter, the ropeless jump rope!
Under $100
Beach Body on Demand, T25 Workout Set – T25 is my current favorite home workout, and when I’m actually done with it I’m going to sign up for Beach Body on Demand. With it (and even with the free 30-day trial!) you have access to T25, P90X, PiYo, 21 Day Fix, Insanity, and many more popular workouts. I have to admit, I’m not 100% behind all things Beach Body (I’m mostly looking at you, ridiculously condescening Shakeology commercials before and after workouts!) but the workouts are great. My favorite Beach Body coach (she doesn’t pay me to say that!) can help you out with any other questions you have, too!
YurBuds Leap Wireless headphones – It’s true, I have sort of a collection if in-ear headphones. The best I own are the ones I use for the stage, but they’re a little obnoxious for everyday use. I’ve used some Bose ones and Outdoor Tags (my first bluetooth headphones), before recently acquiring these. I stand by the Outdoor Tags, but so far the YurBuds stay in my ears better while running, and don’t cut out when my phone is in my pocket or a bag.
More expensive, but worth every penny
Fitbit – Before I had my Apple Watch, I actually really enjoyed my FitBit. I not-so-fondly remember the first full day wearing it. As my husband hears all the time from his patients, “I’m a mom of young kids. Trust me, I get PLENTY of exercise”, I assumed I would easily knock out the recommended 10,000 steps before lunchtime. Ha! I was so, so very wrong. I will say though, that I was much more inclined to park farther away, take the steps, etc as is often suggested to improve wellness, knowing that it would count for something. I had the Zip (Ladies, this fits in and accurately gauges steps from the middle of your bra. Men, I have no idea what to tell you.) and know the Flex is also highly recommended. I never opted for the latter because it isn’t all that pretty, but it appears they’ve started to try and fix that problem!
Apple Watch – If you do want to splurge on a little more than FitBit (ok, a lot more…) the Apple Watch has so many great fitness features. In addition to its step counter and heart rate monitor, it also connects to MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, the Apple Health app, etc
Also consider a membership to the local gym, YMCA, etc. Memberships – ones that the recipient will use – always make phenomenal gifts!
