It’s no secret to anyone that knows us that we adore children’s books. Before my twins were born, I started collecting them via scholastic fliers at a friend’s kids’ school, and through an unhealthy obsession with bookstores. My husband and I hadn’t yet had our first child, and our home had over 300 picture books – organized in a spreadsheet of course. It got out of control, really. I totally blame the pregnancy.
I’m much more deliberate now about what books we buy (after all I remembered how much more I value simplicity than large collections of anything), but my love for them hasn’t changed. I get just as excited (or more!) when a new book joins our family, so I was thrilled when Penguin Young Readers reached out about their latest catalog.
The first book we got to read is The Thing about Yetis, by Vin Vogel (get it on Amazon). The author of several other children’s books, this is Vogel’s first project as author-illustrator… and it’s the pictures that drew me in to begin with. I mean, how cute is this little guy?!
The story follows the yetis as they play with children and enjoy everything winter has to offer. But as yetis can, they have a few surprises. For one, they sometimes miss summer, too! This was such a fun read as we head into another grey, cold winter in the midwest! The book is charming while being short enough for even the squirmiest of preschoolers to enjoy, and funny enough that some (my three-year-old included) will sit through it over and over again.
With so many picture books available for purchase, I often find myself overwhelmed when trying to pick just one. I’m excited to bring not just “grown up”, non-fiction book reviews to you going forward, but quick reviews of picture books that are just perfect for little ones. These will all make great additions to your collection or great gifts… or I’ll tell you if I think otherwise!
The giveaway for this product has ended, but you can purchase it anywhere great picture books are sold! 🙂
Stay tuned later this month for an additional announcement from Penguin Young Readers, as they give away dozens of books during their “12 Days of Picture Books” promotion!
DISCLOSURE: I was given a copy of “The Thing about Yetis” for review, as well as an additional copy for one of my readers, by Penguin Young Readers. I was not required to give a positive review, and all opinions are my own and/or that of the littles book critics in our family.
