Feeling a little silly this week, largely perhaps as a defense mechanism to avoid climbing out of the “perpetually behind” funk I’m feeling. Â So for you, this week, some confessions on the less noteworthy side….
- When my girls were about 2, I had them convinced that Lucky Charms et al were “grown up cereals”, while Cheerios and other healthier alternatives for growing kids were “kid cereals”. Â I laughed at myself for how backwards that was, but still make similar “do as I say not as I do” disclaimers. Â Case in point? Â The Double Stuf Golden Oreos I had for breakfast today.
- I painstakingly pick out ringtones/songs for the various people who might call me – choices that reflect their personalities, impact they’ve had on my life (um, good or bad, because you know I leave people in my contacts just to avoid (or be prepared for calls…), inside jokes, etc – though in the several years that I’ve had iPhones I’ve kept them on silent and have heard any ring at all probably less than 3 times total. Â Of course this means I’d have no idea who was calling half the time even with intentional tones, but that doesn’t stop me from choosing them.
- In a similar vein, I make airport playlists (formerly airport CDs) for any of our vacations. Â Lots of people make road trip playlists, yes. Â But whether the drive to the airport is 35 minutes or 95 depending on where we go, the list is absurdly thought out. Â We’re talking timing songs to the sunrise or speed of the road on which we’ll be traveling, evaluating the flow of one song to the next (and based on how awake we’ll be, especially as early as we often leave), etc. Â In addition, of course, to being about our impending travel and family time. Â And ending (ideally) exactly when Kyle drops the kids and I off at the circle. Â Yes, I am a giant nerd.
- I eat (and love) a large variety of ethnic foods and am thrilled to try anything at least once.  I absolutely will not eat mushrooms, though, and kind of hate onions.  And celery.  And I strongly dislike tomatoes.  My family calls that picky, which I find ridiculous. 😉
- I have this strange, ongoing internal conflict about whether I’m truly a Mid-Atlantic girl or a Southern (though still big city) girl at heart, despite the fact that when pressed, I am usually quite content being “stuck” in the Midwest. Â I might move to San Diego in a heartbeat though, if my family would come, if only for the weather. Â And we will move to Atlanta or the Carolinas when Kyle retires or wants a new job – that’s not a question.
- My “must do” list would include several thrill-seeking adventures like sky diving, but definitely not scuba diving. Â I have been and loved hang-gliding but get anxious (almost like claustrophobia…? Â I don’t know, I don’t otherwise have it) at the thought of being underwater for too long (or at great depths).
- I hate eels more than any animal in the world, and – though I’ve worked on desensitizing some in recent years – used to have a hilariously disproportionate reaction when I saw them. Â I blame Flotsam and Jetsam.
- I hate to read fiction, except for anything by John Grisham (random) and Dan Brown (though decidedly not The DaVinci Code). Â Still, I’m an absolute sucker for etymology, grammar, etc.
- I have always been good at spelling, but can never spell the word millennium on the first try.
Your turn!  What’s one silly thing you are dying to get off your chest today?! 🙂

1) Mushrooms are a fungus, not food. End of debate.
2) We convinced Addy (and she still slightly believes it) that she couldn’t get out of her big girl bed without mommy or daddy in the room. Worked miracles when she first started sleeping in it, huge pain for middle of the night potty breaks now though.
Jennifer Kaufman
I love your fungus vs food argument. Agree wholeheartedly! I love that Addy still waits for you in order to get out of bed. Probably worth these nighttime potty runs for the morning peace, especially when she outgrows the overnight pottying! 🙂 We’d love to have you guys for a mushroom-free dinner soon!

#3, you remind me of jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets- one of my all time favorite movies. ‘You make me wanna be a better man…’ Best quote of the movie, IMHO. 😀
Jennifer Kaufman
I haven’t seen that movie in so long… might need to make it a priority! 🙂

Some of these made me belly laugh! I’m a scuba diver and thought I’d feel the same way about being so far underwater. But I promise, you don’t even notice it. And, you’re looking at such beautiful creations that you don’t even care how far you’re down. It really is wonderful. 🙂 Hmm, a silly confession . . . when eating M&Ms, I always save a green one to eat last. Always.
Jennifer Kaufman
Do you consciously save the green M&Ms, or has it just become habit? I definitely eat M&Ms, skittles, etc either in a pattern (the most common choice, in order to spread the love and not end on a flavor or combination I don’t prefer) or one color at a time… but don’t have any consistency or method to the madness. 🙂
As for scuba diving… maybe some day I’ll take the plunge, literally. I can only imagine how incredible the sights are!

Ha! I’m the same way. I consciously eat my least favorite colors first so that I end with a good flavor or color. And yes, I do actually think about saving a green M&M for last!

I’m with you on #6. No scuba diving. The thought is just too much. But sky diving, that’s definitely on the list. And tomatoes are overrated unless in a beautiful pasta or pizza sauce. 🙂
Jennifer Kaufman
In the past few years, I’ve grown to tolerate well-placed tomatoes in italian food. I don’t even pick around them anymore. Maybe I’m a grown up, now, at 29? 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

I went scuba diving once and had a full on panic attack on the surface- but pushed through, and when I was finally deep and looked around, it was the most amazing experience ever.
Love the ringtones- I miss that about pre-iPhone days, because everyone has the same ring now on my phone, and I just keep it silent.
Fun list!
Jennifer Kaufman
Anita, thanks so much for reading and commenting! As another commenter said, you might be onto something with the beautiful sights making up for the momentary panic… so long as it was momentary 🙂

This made me laugh. I can SO appreciate your airport playlist genius creations. I like to pretend like my whole life is a movie and every movie needs a rockin’ playlist.
The thought of scuba diving makes my heart race and I sorta feel like I”m dying a little bit. Drowning is my BIGGEST fear. When the movie Titanic came out I literally had a panic attack in the theater once the boat hit the iceburg and started taking on water. It was just all too much.
I don’t like ketchup if it is cold and I don’t like syrup on anything. I can taste the difference between fountain diet pepsi’s bought at different places. If you lined up 50 of them I could take a drink of each one and tell you which one came from my favorite gas station. It’s sorta one of my superpowers.
Jennifer Kaufman
Yes, playlists for everything and music at all times! 🙂 I’ve gathered here and there that you like a bit of variety in your music, too. Necessary for all the variety in life, yes?!
Confession #10: I haven’t seen titanic. I avoided it when it was all the rage as sort of a protest against the crazy girls I knew that were seeing it sometimes multiple times in a day. Now I guess it’s sort of a thing I don’t want to give up. I have similar reactions to any underwater/drowning scene, though. Yep, I would be ok dying without seeing that one.
Not a big ketchup fan either, though a good barbecue sauce or ranch dressing can go on just about any food. I can pick McDonald’s Diet Coke out of a lineup (though maybe only a lineup of 10 or 20 :)), but that’s where my powers end!

Wow! I like your idea about the personalized ringtones! Though, like you, I too keep my phone on vibrate only mode, so it would be wasted for me too!

If it makes you feel better, I fed my girls a very healthy breakfast this morning and then ate a bowl of ice cream with chocolate chips after I dropped them off at daycare!
Jennifer Kaufman
Oh, it does! And it also sounds quite delicious… I really wish I had some ice cream here! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
