Earlier than she anticipated, Jennifer tackles terorrism – but not politics. Definitely not politics.
Inspired by conversations around the hostage events in Sydney, Australia in December 2014, these are the thoughts that were shared (however incomplete) on the topic:
- Social Media is an amazing source and tool for news in this day and age, but we need to be extra critical of the things we consume. Things are usually very quick but not always very accurate. The same can be said for more traditional news outlets.
- Choose your words wisely when YOU are the one “speaking” online.
- We should be mindful of how much news we are consuming from any source. The content we consume (drama, tragedy, etc) can have an impact on the rest of our life.
- We cannot live in fear. It’s easier said than done, of course, but if we live in fear 1) terrorists win and, unrelated to world news, 2) we accomplish nothing.
- Quick judgement of entire groups of people is nothing short of hatred. There are small, outspoken groups of misguided individuals in any large people group. There are also so many “normal”, kind, loving people that are a lot like you even if they look or believe differently.
- There is never going to be a change in the world that doesn’t first start with the people with whom you are in a relationship.
- The movement #illridewithyou shed some light on the good side of humanity, and reminds us that we NEED to remember the good. Coming alongside of people and showing love is exactly the response we need to provide when people are scared and facing difficult times.
- The world can be an ugly place, but we can choose to see the good in others and the good in our own sitautions, and to choose to not allow the bad news in the world (or our own junk) to consume us.
